38 year old Rodney Hinton Jr. charged with killing deputy Larry Henderson

38 year old Rodney Hinton Jr. has been charged with killing a deputy officer, a day after his 18 year old son Ryan Hinton was killed by a Cincinnati police officer.

On May 1, 2025, 18-year-old Ryan Hinton was fatally shot by Cincinnati police officers. Authorities reported that Ryan was among four individuals in a stolen vehicle. Upon being approached by officers, the occupants fled. During the pursuit, police claim Ryan pointed a handgun at them, prompting officers to open fire.

Body camera footage captures an officer shouting, “He’s got a gun! He’s got a gun!” Moments later, Hinton emerged between two dumpsters, and an officer fired multiple shots, striking him twice. Despite immediate medical aid, Hinton succumbed to his injuries. The recovered firearm had not been discharged. The police involved in shooting Ryan Hinton has not been named.

The following day, Hinton’s father, Rodney Hinton Jr., met with police to view the body camera footage and obviously left disturbed with what he saw. The family had to drive him home, but he came out later to pick up his car and he allegedly drove his vehicle into retired Hamilton County Sheriff’s Deputy Larry Henderson, who was directing traffic near the University of Cincinnati during graduation ceremonies. Deputy Henderson later succumbed to his injuries. Rodney Hinton Jr. has been charged with aggravated murder and is being held without bond.

During the court proceedings, Hinton’s defense attorney described his client as emotionally distraught after viewing the body camera footage of his son’s shooting. The attorney emphasized the need to consider Hinton’s mental state, suggesting that he was not in his right mind at the time of the incident.

Family members expressed their grief and confusion over the events. Theresa Larkin, Ryan Hinton’s aunt, recounted her reaction to the body camera footage, stating, “When I finally saw that video and watched my nephew drop, it was like my soul left my body. I can only imagine how his father felt.”

The whole incident is sad all round, sad for the Hinton family, and sad for Larry Henderson family, a man who has served for 33 years, to go out that way, for no fault of his.

The police officer who killed Ryan Hinton needs to be named, and justice needs to be served.

Praying for everyone involved.
