Before I watched it, I went to google who the culprit was, and when I say my Jaw dropped, A spider could have built a web in my mouth.
Apparently, it was Lauryn’s mother. Why? I do not know. In the documentary, it says that Lauryn and Owen were receiving more than 30 text messages a day. Her dedication to the entire saga is one that I should probably adopt for my job, but I digress.

I don’t want to spoil too much of the documentary, but if you haven’t watched it, you should. But I have to say, I really do not understand why she did it. I mean her cousin provided some insight as to why that might be the case (see Munchausen syndrom by Proxy), but It still doesn’t make a lot of sense to me. The very vile things she sent to her daughter, even involving police and telling her to kill herself is crazy to me.

When questioned as to why she did it in the documentary, she defended herself by saying that drunk driving is also a crime, just as what she did is a crime, but the reception is different in her own case.
Drunk driving is an activity that happens when one is not lucid, for the most part. Cyberstalking your own daughter for the better part of 2 years, and telling her to kill herself, is something that happens when you can think coherently, and if your family ostracizes you as a result I don’t think there’s a single person on earth who would wonder why.
