Marcus Fakana Is Finally Home After Six Months in a Dubai Prison

Marcus Fakana, a 19-year-old from Tottenham, is back in the UK after spending six months in a Dubai prison, all because of a consensual relationship with a 17-year-old girl while they were both on holiday, when he was 18 years old.

They were in the same school year, both British, and both from London. But in the UAE, there’s no recognised age of consent, and all sex outside marriage is technically illegal. After the girl returned to the UK, her mother saw their messages and reported Marcus to the authorities in Dubai.

He was sentenced to one year in prison. He served six months before receiving a royal pardon from Dubai’s ruler, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, during Eid.

Campaign group Detained in Dubai supported the family throughout. According to them, Marcus never knew the girl was under 18, as they were also in the same school year, and in any case, he shouldn’t have been prosecuted for something that wouldn’t even be considered a crime at home.

Now he’s home, and his family is relieved. This case is a stark reminder that what’s normal or legal in one country can be treated very differently elsewhere. It’s important to learn the laws of any country you’re visiting, especially places with strict cultural and legal norms.
Wishing Marcus the best as he gets back on his feet. No one should have to go through something like that so young.
