Microsoft layoffs: 6,000 to lose jobs in new layoff plans

Sad day for people working with Microsoft, as they have just announced that they plan to layoff 6,000 staff, that is 3% of their workforce. Crazy stuff. This is one of the largest Microsoft layoffs since 2023 when 10,000 staff were let go off.

According to the Mircosoft spokeperson in their statement to CNBC, they said the layoff will span various departments and regions and their objective was to reduce layers of management, “We continue to implement organizational changes necessary to best position the company for success in a dynamic marketplace”

These Microsoft layoffs comes a year after they laid off some 1,900 Activision Blizzard and Xbox employees, and the laid off 650 Xbox staff just last September.

It might look like just numbers, but as a person with a 9-5, that’s 6,000 families taking a blow to their finances and quality of life for a period of time. I really wish tech companies will stop the annoying habits of over-hiring and then firing those people, like they are just numbers. As this layoffs isn’t just a Microsoft problem, in the last couple of months, we’ve seen mass layoffs across Amazon, Google, Meta, and Salesforce. The whole tech spaces seems to be in this awkward phase of scaling back after a hiring frenzy, affecting the regular folks, and not touching the C-suite.

Sadly, a friend of mine got cut up in the 2023 layoffs. In fact no form of personalisation, mostly just done by a data analyst, deciding who doesn’t make the cut. I hear this layoff extends to LinkedIn staff this time around, so prayers up for them.

The spokesperson did say affected employees will receive a 60-day notice period, during which they will remain on the payroll and retain eligibility for bonuses. So I am hopeful, that the affected people by the Microsoft layoffs will get settled in a new role before.

More updates will be added, when anything comes up.
