Syracuse University Suspends Fraternity Students Over Extremely Racist Initiation Video.

This week, a fraternity at Syracuse University was suspended after videos surfaced showing members using language they should really be ashamed of during an initiation oath. Chancellor Kent Syverud described the videos, created by the university’s chapter of Theta Tau, as “extremely racist, anti-Semitic, homophobic, sexist, and hostile to people with disabilities.”

Some of the disturbing remarks include the following pledge: “I solemnly swear to always have hatred in my heart for n——, s—-, and most importantly the fucking k—-.” In another clip, a person sat down in a chair and another guy yelled, “He’s drooling out of his mouth because he’s retarded in a wheelchair.”

In the scene that has incited students across Syracuse to protest the frat behind the video, the Tri Kappa leader stands before a Theta Tau member (the same one who had sex with a dog earlier in the skit).

He makes the inductee kneel and asks:

“Do you know the oath?”

“F‑‑‑ black people,” says the inductee, who then says something similar about Hispanics, but with a racial slur.

“You’re close,” says the leader. “I solemnly swear … ”

“I solemnly swear,” repeats the inductee, who like the leader delivers his lines in an exaggerated Southern accent.

“To always have hatred in my heart for …”

“To always have hatred in my heart for …”

“[Black people]”

The inductee repeats the word, which this newspaper cannot, followed by another slur for Hispanics, followed by much laughter from the audience.

“And most importantly … ” says the leader, prompting the second man to complete the oath by using a slur for Jewish people.

A simulated sex act involving an aluminum can follows the oath, and the crowd applauds.

According to student newspaper The Daily Orange, the videos were filmed in the Theta Tau house and were posted in a secret Facebook group called “Tau of Theta Tau.” The videos have since been removed from Facebook and students have protested for the school the release the full clips.

“I am appalled and shaken by this and deeply concerned for all members of our community,” Syverud said in the email.

In response, the engineering fraternity apologized and said the “disgraceful language” was meant as a parody. “It was a satirical sketch of an uneducated, racist, homophobic, misogynist, sexist, ableist and intolerant person. The young man playing the part of this character nor the young man being roasted do not hold any of the horrible views espoused as a part of that sketch,” they explained on their website. “The language used in this sketch is disgraceful, and it made the active brothers very uncomfortable.”

The fraternity was suspended on Wednesday and there is currently an investigation underway.
